Love, the Magician
The below is from the Luhrs website:
The Shippensburg University Community Orchestra under the direction of Ryan Kozak presents a program of classical works inspired by the magic of love.
The overture to one of Mozart’s most popular operas, the comedic Cosi fan tutte, is immediately recognizable as a musical expression of the shenanigans that ensue as the lovers in the opera play tricks on each other to test the measure of their devotion. Rakastava, or “The Lover” by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, is a lushly romantic piece inspired by Finnish folk poems about love, with different aspects of love expressed through the varying rich qualities of the string instruments in the orchestra. 20th century Swiss/French composer Arthur Honegger was known as one of “les Six”, a group of influential French composers that included Darius Milhaud and Francis Poulenc. Honegger’s dreamy Pastorale d’ete is prefaced by the quote ‘J’ai embrassé l’aube d’été’(‘I embraced the summer dawn’), and indeed the work unfolds with an evocative dawn-like romance that evolves into a magical dance with strings, woodwind and horn. El amor brujo (“Love, the Magician”) by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla brings flamenco into a classical context with a series of musical dances that convey an old Andalusian legend of a young widow haunted by the ghost of her jealous husband, and how she and her lover break free of his curse with true love’s kiss.
Enjoy a wonderful evening of music with the Shippensburg University Community Orchestra!
